Tennis icon Serena Williams is making her presence felt in basketball by joining the ownership group of the WNBA’s newest franchise, the Toronto Tempo. Announced earlier today, her investment, alongside Kilmer Sports Ventures Chairman Larry Tanenbaum, represents a grand slam-sized victory for women’s sports, both in Canada and globally. While the deal is pending final league approval, Williams is already positioned to influence the franchise off the court.

Set for its inaugural season in 2026, the only Canadian club will be based at Coca-Cola Coliseum, with plans to take select games across Canada to build a national presence and fan base. Williams, with an estimated $340 million (USD) empire of wealth, isn’t just bringing financial strength; she will be directly involved in molding the team’s brand identity, from jersey designs and merchandise collaborations to community programs. Her vision aligns with the Tempo’s mission, to elevate women’s basketball and inspire the next generation of athletes.

“I am thrilled to be part of this historic moment as an owner of the Toronto Tempo,” Williams said in a statement. “This isn’t just about basketball—it’s about amplifying the value of female athletes and recognizing that women’s sports are a powerful investment. I’m excited to help drive real change and grow the game in Canada.”

Williams’ entry into sports ownership is a natural progression of her legacy. She has spent decades breaking barriers in tennis, and now she’s bringing that same energy to the WNBA at a time when the league is experiencing record viewership, rising corporate sponsorships, and expanding markets.

Tanenbaum, a leading figure in Canadian sports business, welcomed Williams to the organization, highlighting the significance of her role.

“Serena’s influence reaches far beyond sport. Her leadership, experience, and commitment to excellence will help shape the Tempo into a franchise that reflects the ambition, diversity, and energy of Toronto and Canada as a whole.”

The Tempo represents a defining moment for Canadian basketball, ushering in the country’s first WNBA team. With Williams helping to lead the way, the franchise is poised to break new ground and reinforce what many already believe: women’s sports aren’t just thriving, they’re a powerhouse worth investing in.
