Cabo Serves Again: The ATP Tour Hits the Baja Coast
As we all pause to take a deep breath after a scintillating fortnight at Wimbledon, both the ATP and WTA tours now shift into high gear for the second half of the tennis season. With the covers drawn over the grass courts of SW19, the 2025 grass-court swing has officially come to a close. Our attention now turns to the hard courts in the lead-up to the US Open, beginning in late August.
This week on the ATP calendar: Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. While this tournament is a 250-level event, the iconic holiday destination on the southern tip of Baja California is no stranger to attracting top-tier talent. The 2025 edition of the Mifel Open by Telcel Oppo features top seed and world No. 10 Andrey Rublev, Canadian star Denis Shapovalov, and Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who is chasing his first title of the season after runner-up finishes in Delray Beach and Acapulco.
With a prize pool of $889,890 USD, this year's champion will take home a substantial $135,325 USD—a notable purse for a 250-level tournament.
Making those numbers possible is title sponsor Mifel, a Mexican bank offering insurance, credit cards, wealth management, investments, and financial advice. Since the tournament’s inception in 2016, Mifel has held title sponsorship and now celebrates a decade of partnership with the ATP Tour.
Joining as co-title sponsors in 2023, Telcel—a leading Mexican telecommunications company—and global tech brand Oppo teamed up with Mifel to create a tri-branded title sponsorship. Telcel, already well known for its involvement with the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis (ATP Acapulco), plays a vital role in connecting fans through technology, providing 5G coverage, digital ticketing, and seamless on-site experiences.
Oppo, on the other hand, is deepening fan engagement with hands-on experiences featuring their latest devices. The company also supports rising stars through athlete sponsorships, including 20-year-old Mexican hopeful Rodrigo Pacheco Méndez, who is part of this year’s draw.
Cabo may be a vacation paradise, but for the players, it’s all business. With titles, rankings, and US Open momentum on the line, the 2025 Mifel Open promises more than just stunning views—it delivers high-stakes tennis and emerging talent on full display. Whether you're tuning in from home or lucky enough to be there in person, this is one stop on the tennis calendar you won’t want to miss this week.
